Confession Confusion

One to Another

Going to a Priest for Confession is no substitute for asking forgiveness of the one you wronged. I am amazed at how some people think that their job is done and all is well simply by getting "absolution" after a dictate of a penance of a few Hail Mary's after they have wronged someone when there is no requirement to go to that person wronged and directly ask forgiveness and make amends (one of the 12 step hallmarks for AA). "I am sorry, please forgive me, I still love you" does a lot to redress the mistrust generated from an act of insensitivity or betrayal and goes a long way toward mending the lost trust engendered and dispels fear that the confessing person doesn't have a clue what they actually did, how bad it really was or that they intend to change their behavior. The catholic church makes this less personal by providing a "community representative" who is supposed to be the conscience of the community in upholding the ethical standard and empowering him with the church's authority to stand in Christ's place and forgive sins because "what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven" etc. which is viewed as an authority exclusively in the catholic Church's hands by catholics (the Protestant perspective is that it is authority in each believer's hands or in the community of the faithful's hands.)

The fact that the church may bless and absolve someone does not say anything about whether the wronged individual has come into forgiveness and it helps to hear "sorry." I don't know why it isn't mandatory procedure and protocol to require that the person seeking absolution try to make amends and seek forgiveness first of the wronged person then report back what happened before a wrote repetition of prayers is deemed sufficient to expiate all guilt.

Then the scribe said to him,
"You are right, Rabboni [Teacher]; you have said truly that 'He is One, and besides Him there is no other'; and 'to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,' and 'to love one's neighbor as oneself,' --
this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him,

"You are not far from the kingdom of God."
- Mark 12:32-34

A House

Is Not a Home

And a Building

Is not a Church

Unless Loves Reigns therein.

And if Love of a People quashes Love of Person,

It's not Love, It's Ego and shallow Ambition.

Congratulations All Round

To Rahm Emmanuel -new White House Chief of Staff.

Obama is calling for a renewed spirit of public service.
So what job do you want?
If anyone calls, I wouldn't turn down Ambassador to the Vatican---- so I can lobby the Pope on a few things- like why women can't be deacons when they existed in the New Testament for starters (and I mean starters).
I would settle for staff something in training just to be part of history. This is exciting.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
1 John 5:14

OH BEAUTIFUL FOR SPACIOUS SKIES

Where the Ark of the moral universe glistens a rainbow through Grant Park

...and Jesus loves all his little children.

My father’s house has many rooms. If it were not so, why would I tell you - I have gone to prepare a place for you.

My country ‘tis of thee- where there is a place for everybody.

Where this land is your land and this land is my land, from California to the New York Island and the Gulf Stream waters welcome the teaming immigrants searching for the American promise of new life in the new country. This land is your land, this land is my land, whether you are black, white, brown, Asian American, African American, German American, Jewish American, Irish American, Italian American, Protestant American, Catholic American, Muslim American, French American, Anglo American, Mexican American, Puerto Rican American, or Native American (or any combination thereof). Because we are not red states and blue states we are all just Americans in this United States. And every last one of us is created in the very image of God Almighty with a purpose to share with and build up each other.

This land is your land this land is my land, and we rise and fall together because we need each other, and together is our strength. This is a land where love still overcomes hatred and the puny pettiness of intolerance. This is a land where Grace freely given exacts a love freely given in return
to all, that rises to the challenge of its responsibilities to face a world wrought with tensions and traumas to bring healing and peace.

This is a land where you are only limited by your vision. Because everyone in America can achieve whatever they believe and the American dream can be dreamed by every single American. The only out-cast in America is the self-exiled because all are welcome here.
And love should never be underestimated.

This is a land where there is no room for self-pity or self-loathing. In this land the mixed race child of a twice divorced woman, abandoned by her lover can raise a child to be President and leader of the free world. If she can do it, so can you.

This is a land where a mixed race young man lost and floundering in adolescent drugs whose father abandoned him can find his voice and go to Harvard Law School and become the President and leader of the free world. If he can do it so can you.

This is a land where a middle American white woman from Kansas fell in love with an immigrant black man and got pregnant without any guarantee that he would stay, and did not abort the mixed race child but raised him to become the President and leader of the free world. She chose Life. If she can do it, so can you.

This is a land where the white grandparents took in their black grandson when their daughter came into struggles almost beyond herself, and poured everything they had into
him, to where he became the first African American President of these United States and leader of the free world. If they can do it, so can you.

And this is a land where the arrogance of power will prove once again that God will humble those blinded by the pride of their own conceits because two things he despises: a haughy heart and a lying tongue.

No, this is not a country for the self-pitying or self-loathing.
No time for that.
This is not a country for the gloating of retributive shouts of “trounced!” or vendettas. No room for that.

This is a time for a national catharsis of group hugs, tears and confident high fives looking toward a future of Peace and Prosperity.

This is a land where love still overcomes. It overcomes dogmas, dictates of petty oppressions, egos and minds. Love overcomes every time. And my neighbor is the person who needs my tender loving care. Now, more than ever.

This is a land where education and knowledge doesn’t puff up it builds up a house of informed wisdom where each and every citizen in this Democracy is called to be a brick linked to the Cornerstone of Love, where a most dangerous demon enemy is called ignorance.

This is a land where Life can flourish in colors as varied as a wildflower garden, each one beautiful and precious. Each and every one making the garden more and more beautiful.

This land is your land, this land is my land. And we can build a glorious place together, where the generosity of hearts open to the Spirit will embrace the better angels of our nature and heal a land bruised and crushed by yesterday’s ghost’s past power trips over a bridge to nowhere, because Love Himself is the Repairer of the Breach.

Your heart was made in the image of His Heart –and thus made for Love, if only you will let it.
This is a new journey for a new day. The Lord lives. Blessed be my Rock.

Baruch Hashem.

And Thank you Lord for our new leader,

Baruch Barack, and bless and guide him and his entire beautiful family.

Here is a prayer we can all say together as we embark on a new Era in America:

Saint Michael the ArchAngel
Defend us in battle
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil
may God rebuke him we humbly pray
and Cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
Who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Joie et Paix,
Cynthia

Happy All Souls Day

REQIUM WITH SAINT CATHERINE

Agnus Dei Agnus Dei Qui Tolles Peccata Mundi Donna Nobis Requim. (Charlotte Church sings it gloriously--get the CD for Christmas.)

The Wonderful Counselor told me to get out of Dodge the Sunday before the Election madness to visit with my adorable two year old nephew, who was outfitted in his Curious George costume for neighborhood trick-or-treating in Connecticut. I went to All Soul's Day at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Riverside, Connecticut (next door to Greenwhich), http://www.stcath.org/- and knew all the songs. Probably annoyed the choir because I actually sung choir parts (ever so softly) Some mezzo-Soprano with an incredibly beautiful rich voice did her best at a Charlotte Church immitation and pulled it off. She should be on broadway- and might be-it's Greenwhich after all here.
The lovely Monsignor Alan Detscher delivered a great homily on praying for our relatives and parish friends who passed over reminding us that we all will one day leave these temples of the Holy Spirit and live hopefully "In the Spirit" with Him and in Him in a new and powerful way. I almost told him I saw the head of Saint Catherine in Sienna but then thought-hasn't everyone!

Two things I want to jump up and down and shout "Yahoo Horray For you!" for at that church;
The Samaritan's Purse Christmas shoe box drive and the Saint Luke's Life Works mission they sponsor.

The Samaritan's Purse is an eceumenical (religious non-partisan) organization that has an amazing ministry- this church accepts donations of empty shoe boxes (don't throw them out, send them here) and then parishioners take one and fill it with Christmas presents and goodies for either a girl or boy within an age appropriate range that they indicate on the box. Include a check for $7.00 for shipping and handling and the Samaritan's Purse foundation does the rest and gives some destitute child around the globe- all around the world a christmas present. www.Samaritanspurse.org

The Saint Luke's Life Works (www.stlukeslifeworks.org) is a leading social service org. in New England providing shelter, education, and support services to homeless folks- they are accepting now towels and sheets. There are kids in this program- families with kiddies. So if you have anything that your kids don't need or are tired of, send it along to them. They are looking for kiddies educational DVDs, gently used blankets, towels, bath rugs (not skanky please), all kinds of cleaning supplies, gift certificates, kids educational things like pens, pencils, colored paper, personal hygene stuff for men and women, batteries for kiddies toys and twin bed sheets.

So if you are looking for ways to be really helpful this Christmas, here are two ideas. Regardless of who gets elected.

BABY SHOWER!

Sextuplets Born to New York Couple

as reported in the AP wire to Aol today....

A couple who already had one child got a nice BIG surprise:

Sextuplets, -- the second set ever born in New York City.

Four boys and two girls were born earlier this month to 31-year-old Digna Carpio and her 36-year-old husband, Victor, a maintenance worker with the city's Housing Authority.

Digna and Victor Carpio gave son Jhan Carlos, 7, four brothers and two sisters Oct. 6 when Digna gave birth to sextuplets. Justin, Danelia, Jezreel, Genesis, Joel and Jadon Carpio were born at 25 weeks and weighed 1 1/2 to 2 pounds each.

After some heart valvue surgeries babies are all fine- and Mom's comment

"Life is beautiful, and we're so thankful."

The sextuplets were born at Manhattan's Mount Sinai Medical Center, weighing 1 1/2 to 2 pounds each.

City Council member Tony Avella gets BIG applause- he started a collection for baby supplies.
GRAZIE TONY!
Anyone can donate to this wonderful family through Avella's city counsel office- I am sure they would be so happy to be blessed with your kids gently used left overs.

Maddie and Stanley

BARACH OBAMA'S GRAND-FOLKS--
just down home midwestern All American Folks.
These are the good people who raised him from the age of 10.

So get over yourself.

Chicken or Egg? Just curious...........

I AM SOME "BODY"
(apparently a Human One)

If a woman can't eat how far do you think she can carry a pregnancy?
(that's why it's still "the economy stupid...")

If a woman can't keep or get a job to keep or get a roof over her head how far do you think she can carry a pregnancy?
(that's why it's still about equal non-discriminatory employment, and affordable housing.)

What do you propose to do to a woman who is terrified that she is pregnant, dumped by her lover, homeless, jobless and without parental support?

Handcuff her to the bed in the psych ward kicking and screaming and feed her intervenously until she delivers?

(That's why it's still about abstinence education, job training, educational grants, student loans, affordable housing, non-predatory mortgage fairness.)

And because of absentee fathers and a 50% divorce rate....

... It Still Takes A Village.

So note to Bishops- start a program where you adopt a single pregnant woman without any means for ten months and provide her with everything she needs so she can carry a child to healthy term without ending up in the psych ward and more people will listen to you. I don't mean start a program where your flock takes the burden- you do it. You adopt a woman and care for her for ten months. You might even find yourself falling in love with her- some people might even call that "marriage." (heaven forbid?)
TALK IS CHEAP (while its good fundraising fodder)
“I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 29:11-14

Let them Eat Cake (but not Gay Wedding Cake)

A sermon/homily by Tom Reese, S.J--a very beloved Jesuit Priest
A Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center, and a former Editor of Americas Jesuit Magazine,
(who gets in trouble with Rome now and again for being so smart).

On the subject of the
Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21

The relationship between religion and politics has always been controversial. In many ancient countries like Egypt and Mexico, the kings were treated as gods. The Jewish religion, especially through the prophets, took political leaders off their pedestals and opened them to criticism.

In the time of Jesus, Israel was a colony of the Roman Empire and some argued that paying taxes to the empire was traitorous, even blasphemous. In the temple, the Pharisees set a trap for Jesus because if he said he favored paying the Roman tax, then he was a traitor. If he opposed the tax, then he was a revolutionary. It was a classic gotcha question.

Jesus was too smart for them. He asks them for the coin that was used to pay the tax. They showed him a coin and he points to the image of Caesar on the coin, and since it was against the law to bring a graven image into the temple, he showed them up as violators of the law. He then tells them that if you benefit from the reign of Caesar, then pay the tax. Oliver Wendell Holmes said something similar when he said that "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization."

As we approach Election Day, we can be happy that the Catholic Church in the United States does not endorse political parties or candidates.

Many centuries of entanglement of the church and political elites in Europe damaged both the church and the state. Evangelical churches are making the same mistake that the Catholic Church made in Europe for centuries.

At the same time, like the prophets of old, the church has the right and duty to preach justice and peace. To speak on behalf of the poor, the unborn, the homeless, immigrants and refugees is not interfering in politics, it is continuing a prophetic tradition that reminds the powerful that they are not gods--they have obligations and responsibilities and will be judged by God.
We will all be judged by how we treat the least among us.

Some have implied that Catholics should be single issue voters and that the bishops have endorsed a particular candidate. This is not true. In their document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the bishops explicitly say, “As Catholics we are not single-issue voters.”

They also state, “Church’s leaders are to avoid endorsing or opposing candidates or telling people how to vote.” Rather, voter “should take into account a candidate’s commitments, character, integrity, and ability to influence a given issue. In the end, this is a decision to be made by each Catholic guided by a conscience formed by Catholic moral teaching.”

As we continue our Eucharist, we pray to the Lord of history that both voters and political leaders in our country realize their responsibility to work for justice and peace. We also pray that our church leaders realize their responsibilities to promote justice while staying out of partisan politics.

EDITORIAL NOTE:
By: Cynthia L. Butler
An Attorney in Washington, DC

There have been the wildest forms of character assassination levelled against people who do not firmly tote the Republican rhetorical line and inscription of some church leaders to do the condemning at the highest levels, including directly or inferentially calling them unchristian, against or anti- Families, even Baby Killers or conspirators with evil for supporting Democratic politicians all of whom are lumped together in the perception of abortion opponents within the planned parenthood abortion mill infantocidal rubric.

As Obama stated at the last debate "No One Is For Abortion" (whom have you asked lately whether they prefer infant life to death and they said "death.")- it is a question of what policy approach you believe is more effective in terms of eliminating the evils of abortion and creating a society where life can flourish and is chosen and encouraged over the destructive path. Which policy path is going to work better to do the same desired outcome; which is to eliminate the abortion plague on the country.

If you ask Nancy Pelosi or any democrat if they are more for live births or more for abortions of course they are going to state the apple pie response that everyone loves babies, everyone hates abortion and no one thinks it is anything other than a social "evil", a "tragedy" and even a "crime against humanity."

So how do you stop crime? How do you legislate effectively against crimes against humanity and who is responsible for them? The person who caused it? The person who suffers from it? The man who had zero respect for a woman and even less sexual responsibility in a sexual con scam? The woman who tragically was dumped by an abusive lover? Who do you punish to stop the crime against humanity? And is what happens to the woman part of the crime?

Is it more effective to take a legislative approach such as has been forwarded by Republicans previously or the one that appreciates the socio-economic realities of women's psychological make-up, hormonal upsets, stresses in
bearing and raising children, including paying attention to issues of housing, heath care, addictions, homelessness, sub-prime mortgage meltdown, economic crisis and issues of abuse against women. Who has a handle on and pays attention to the issues and factors that feature strongly into positive life decisions? Who is going to do more for women so that they can make the better choice? Who understands that some abortions are done to women who have already children who need them mentally functional and physically present. Who understands better that abusive men who "love them and leave them" have to be accountable in equal degree to the woman left with the agonizing reality that she is unable to support alone a child?

Women know that women really do have authority over their bodies whether it is legislatively given to them or not. A woman who does not want to be pregnant will devise a way-legal or not-to not be pregnant. There are ways that no one would even necessarily know, and there are ways that would do serious permanent injury to her. So who has the better understanding of how to stop a woman from doing that to herself and her offspring? If you just lock her up after the fact is that going to stop her? If you threaten her in advance will that stop her? What will cause her to create the environment necessary in her womb for a healthy pregnancy to develop and sustain for nine months?

Abortions existed at the time of Christ. People were taking poisons and toxic concoctions to expel foetuses well before Christ's advent on the earth. Yet, there is not one mention about it in scripture. What there is multi fold mention of is how much Jesus departed from tradition in elevating women to a place of non-condemning love and respect theretofore alien. The First Evangelist is a woman- the woman at Jacob's well whom Jesus told all her family secrets to and she ran to tell the whole town that there was a prophet who told her all about herself.

Jesus appeared first to a woman at the Tomb who witnessed to his resurrection-Mary Magdalene- who became the first to tell of his Resurrection to Peter and others. Jesus saved a Mary from seven demons. He saved a woman being stoned for adultery. He scolded others when a woman dumped expensive perfume on him, kissed him and washed him with her hair.

Jesus loves and respects women. He especially loves his Mother.

He never condemned any of them. For anything. Most of the condemning he did was against the "Scribes and Pharisees"- guys who put burdens too heavy to bear on people and love to parade about in fine robes and be saluted in the marketplaces and seated at the head table at banquets- Those guys- the full of their self-righteous selves guys-

Those guys he ripped a new one.
Women he just loved.

Jesus never took a poll on the hillside before distributing loaves and fishes to 5,000 people concerning their political views on abortion before feeding them. He never asked their political views before healing them.

When the woman with the hemorrhage touched his cloak and he felt the power exude from him to heal her instantaneously he didn't say "did you have an abortion and thus deserve to bleed to death?" He never put a qualifier on his healing.

So is it more humane and effective to create a social environment wherein women want to choose life, or is it more humane and effective to legislate coercive penalty structures ? It is more humane to heal a heart or legislate a penalty?

What is more effective to save life. Which side is going to make women more cognizant and appreciative of the fact that whenever she makes a "choice" about a pregnancy there is someone else's well being she is dealing with? Which side is going to Love not Condemn women, elevate their dignity in work, elevate their stature and respect, and provide the nurturing environment wherein they can choose Life with willing eagerness and Joy?

These are the questions that we should be asking.

And regardless of what side you come down on- the sort of strident judgmental character assassination levelled at people who have differing views or strategies for promoting Life should find no place in this election or anywhere in the civil political dialogue.

Who Was Al Smith ?

The First Catholic To Run For President. OBAMA addressed the foundation dinner in tribute to his Matthew 25 Spirit.

I desire Love not Sacrifice
the Lord through Hosea said,
because the greatest of these is Love
Paul told those Corinthian dead
and even if you speak in the tongues
of angels and homilize and prophesize
with Solomonic wisdom and strength
If you have not love, you are but a breath
that flickers and gasps for air until
it's extinguished mid-prayer
because God is Love, and Love is God
and anything less is a bridge to nowhere.
So don't you dare confuse
Love with temptation
or insult the bearer of a pure heart
for you, and don't think God
will elevate white martyrdom
into heavenly realms
when you spit on Jesus in the person
right in front of you.
For God is Love and Love is God
And to reject one is to shun the other
and one cannot preach his greatness
while denying his essence
and expect that he smiles on such ignorance.
For God is Love and Love is God
and Love thus deserves the respect
due the Creator because Love is the force
that creates life and sustains it
against all the evil assaults prowling
to seek the ruin of souls.
So don't you dare confuse Love
with Temptation or derride
the bearer of a sacred heart
for you. Heaven and Earth
are full of his Glory
and some of it was sent
to be with you.
