You know the stories of girls hanging on to relationships with guys for way too long when the guy doesn't feel ready to get committed. You know all the things that can get in the way, the other priorities, the other front and back burners, the other work commitments, and all the things that tug and pull a person. You just start taking people for granted, like they will always be there so you can do whatever and dilly dally until you feel better positioned or like you need more money in the bank or a better job. 9-11 was a huge wake up call and a number of marriages shortly followed because people got serious about life.
