EQUAL DIGNITY FOR ALL
Today about 200 people were treated to a moving video presentation at the Mayflower Hotel on the L'Arche organization that strives to bring Equal Dignity to the mentally challenged.
L'Arche, founded by a compassionate Frenchman Jean Vanier, is a network of group homes in which "core members" are matched with loving assistants who deeply care for them and integrate them into community and larger L'Arche family life. Here people who in by-gone eras would have been housed and forgotten in neglectful institutions are instead given the opportunities under special attention to develop all their skills and talents to maximize their humanity rather than disrespect it. In the Washington, DC (Adams Morgan) and Arlington, Northern Virginia areas there are three houses with a fourth in the works. In addition to the grants funding that is already committed, the DC, Northern Virginia area needs another half a million standing endowment to fully meet it's vision and operating expenses.
L'Arche would be very pleased to have you join them in volunteering whatever time you have to meet the "core" community members, share a dinner with them, and assist with the financial needs of the community.
