John Carroll statue at Georgetown's main campus. John Carroll was the first President, a Bishop in Baltimore at a time when DC was in the same Archdiocese. His brother was a signor of the Declaration of Independence. He is buried in the historic Cathdral crypt in Baltimore, Maryland. He also supported the efforts of the first American born Saint Mother Seton, an Episcopalian convert to start the first free education of girls in America. Her order started schools and orphanages all over the East Coast in the 19th century offering totally free education for girls-then unheard of.
