Please Join Us as We Remember the 30th Anniversary of Archbishop Romero’s Death - TOMORROW
ROMERO
In the late '70s, the wealthy few in El Salvador ruled the impoverished many. To maintain the status quo against peasant insurgents and labor organizations, the military regime brutalized the populace through executions and disappearances.
ROMERO presents the story of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero (played by Raul Julia) who initially was considered a conservative leader, chosen to quiet the masses and the activist priests who supported them. "Blessed are the peacemakers," he preaches. But the 1977 killing of a progressive Jesuit priest and personal friend Rutilio Grande, who had been organizing the poor campesinos into self-reliance groups, transformed the Archbishop. Appalled by the government-sanctioned violence, he condemns the regime in radio messages, and leads a peasant march into a church occupied by soldiers. The film builds to its climax in a scene recreating the events of March 24, 1980, when Romero is assassinated while saying Mass. The journey of transformation that Archbishop Romero underwent in seeing Christ in the poor and marginalized individuals with whom he lived is one each of us is invited to make with the persons and events we encounter in our own lives.
