That Lasts
A strong argument for the celibacy of the priesthood that is offered to explain how priests are not refuting the commandment to 'be fruitful and multiply' has to do with an explanation concerning 'fruit that lasts.' In other words, priests believe that giving up the possibility of generating biological children allows them time and focus to generate 'fruit that lasts'- e.g. holiness, righteousness, wisdom, etc...from generation to generation. They believe devoting themselves to their ministries, teaching, writings, etc. is a form of fruit that satisfies this commandment, and indeed is a higher sort of endeavor than merely procreating. Spiritual fruit if you will so souls last to eternity.
Santorum when he argues that special privileges in society should be given to heterosexuals who marry because procreation is the highest form flies in the face of his own religion which does not so insult single people or deem them less worthy or valuable to society. Is a couple who married years after their procreative capacity expired who are taking care of each other less valuable to society simply by virtue of the tardiness of their marriage regardless of how they serve society? Is someone sitting at home doing piles of laundry more valuable to society than someone who never had children and invented the cure for cancer as a research physician? Come on.
Santorum needs to read more scripture.
And he really needs to stop insulting everyone. Gays aren't interested in incest and single people aren't worthless to society. Seriously, is this what you want 'conservative' to mean?
