There is actually rather a lot to cheer about in the Pope's recent ruling. I am proud to be a Smart-A for voicing my opinon against the grain and oddly feel heard.
For one thing- he bucked the
let's keep doing the same dumb thing even though it has been long eclipsed by medical facts crowd. You know who you are- you fact challenged people. Go to confession.
James Martin, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Martin_(Jesuit) a famous Jesuit who grew up not far from where I lived, went to Wharton business school in Pennsylvania and had a corporate finance career at a major US corporation before becoming a Society of Jesus "Jesuit" priest calls it a "game changer." Significant. Maybe- maybe people ignored the rule before and now it just feels better it was called out (like people who have lived together and finally make it 'official.') What does it really change if people just thought it dumb all along and ignored it?
It changes this: it means that the Pope is open to discussion. Shocker. Hope.
I will continue to be an unapologetic Smart-A. Some may even call me a Wise-A.
I don't care. So long as I keep hearing Papal 'game changers' I am going to keep it up.
I may have to be reporting from undisclosed locations like Olberman because the wing-nuts want to see me done in (not kidding-scary.)-
But if something is indefensible- or even evil- isn't it our job to call it out and make more 'Game Changers.' If you don't I will.
