KERMESSE- A Fine French Fair For All

In a bucolic corner of Washington, DC that hardly feels like a city there is a pristine white cross in the corner of a property with an edwardian looking white home on it. I like to call it the Other White House.
This is the only indication that inside exists a chapel, and a peaceful tabernacle, where twice a week the Eucharist is displayed and venerated in prayerful silence before a Mass. It is right behind the Fox studios and I bet you didn't even realize a catholic Mass existed there twice a week. It is the Parish House of Saint Louis de France, the french catholic community in Washington, DC.   click Here for the Parish site.

The elegant erudite graduate of the Sorbonne before  Seminary French Priest resides there. Every year, his ministry to the entire community, which is in DC and Bethesda, is supported by an annual Kermesse- or Fair- Bazaar, a Parisian style flea market, kids games, fun french food sales (crepes, croque monsieur, boeuf borgignone, brie sandwich, etc...), a silent auction, and book sales of french literature.  Not to mention great french wine of course.

I walked past some student housing in Georgetown and saw piled on the street their giveaways as they move out of group houses for the semester. What a shame, I thought- these things would sell at the Kermesse for a good cause. If you are moving, or want to do Spring cleaning and have give aways, please drop them off at the Parish house in Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase.  And come to the Fair-Bazaar September 30, 2012- its one of the best kept secrets in DC.
