Calling All Good Samaritans

Saint Matthews Needs Your Recyclables.

Do you typically throw out or away or into the recycling bin large juice bottles or half gallon jugs- like about twenty a week? You can do something better with them. Saint Matthews Cathedral in downtown Washington, DC runs a homeless ministry through their Social Justice committee in which every Monday between 50 and 100 homeless people get not only a full breakfast, but can "shop" for free in the make shift thrift shop of a clothing distribution, get free toiletries, a free bagged lunch and get a half hour or so talk from a lovely Priest who goes over the Sunday readings in Spanish and English and conducts a discussion group.

We need your bottles and jugs. It is getting really hot -DC can be rather unbearable in the summer. Imagine if you are homeless, and kicked out of your shelter at 7:00 am, and have no money to wander into Starbucks, Cosi or Caribou and sit there to get out of the heat and have to sit in a hot park all day or wander the streets in the heat. Literally hundreds of people a day do that in DC during the summer.

We need to be able to distribute to them water that they can carry with them- so we need your bottles. We also would love it if you wanted to drop off huge family sized containers of Countrytime Lemonade, Ice Tea or other easy powdered drinks we can mix to put in the bottles.

For any further information please contact Teresa Volante, the Social Justice Ministry staff head at Saint Matthews Cathedral (link and numbers to the right.) You can drop this off at the Rectory (17th and Rhode Island) anytime.
