You Thought I Was Kidding Didn't You

The call for Civility Goes Both Ways. Bite Your Tongue.

During the 2004 Kerry campaign at the height of the Iraq war madness people were trying hard to turn the tide for Peace and get Bush out of office. I reported that while a bunch of us DCCC campaign folks were standing on a streetcorner wearing campaign T-shirts and carrying signs pick up trucks literally drove by yelling at us "Baby Killers!" This was shockingly ignorant-

I reported it and no one believed me-come on.....no one is that insane. You must be making it up.

This is a concerted "In Your Face" shock strategy on the part of some pro-life groups. It is an insanely inflammatory term to label anyone who the pro-lifers think supports anyone who supports legislation that they perceive, rightly or wrongly makes it more easy for anyone to choose to get an abortion. Note-no one sticks a gun to anyone's head and says, get an abortion or die- economic pressures compel them often and the Democrats have been trying hard to address those economic pressures for the sake of life.

Just last night it happened again. Some insane old guy yelled "baby killer" at Bart Stupak- the pro-life Democrat who insisted on assurances that pro-life language was in the bill such that no federally funded abortions could be interpreted within it. I was vindicated. Yes, people do shout out this sort of insane epithet on anyone they perceive is not on their exact legislative agenda. "Baby killer." Insane. I personally have loved numerous kiddie cousins, two godchildren, a niece and nephew and all the children I ever met and have never had an abortion. I never met a child I didn't like and wanted ten. Yet, some nutjob in a pick-up truck who didn't like my T-shirt yelled at me I was a baby-killer.

Cardinal McCarrick around this time was castigating anyone with strong anti-Iraq War language as uncivil and urging civility in political dialogue.

This civility thing goes both ways- and to label only one side "uncivil" is to be as partisan as the lunatics who shouted the "N" word at African American congressmen entering congress.

Civility- Get a Grip. We are all in this same country together.
